300 Essential Movies For Your Mancave

Although everyone knows that most people who read horror blogs (or listen to podcasts) only watch really shitty movies and live in "Neckbeard Nests" which wouldn't look out of place in an episode of "Hoarders", if you want to refer to your basement den as a "Mancave", that's perfectly fine unless you're actually a girl.

However, should you ever decide to break the stereotype by collecting and watching some great movies in addition to sadly being surrounded by empty energy drink cans, obsolete games consoles, torn comicbooks, a floor full of soggy tissues containing various unpleasant bodily secretions, piles of dirty laundry, and the corpses of neglected pets (or spouses) rotting under stacks of discarded pizza boxes from the local 7eleven, this list is for you!

In reverse order... even though putting things in order is never that important...

Vincent Price died 20 years ago today

Vincent died on October 25th, 1993. Can you believe it?

He died before most of today's horror fans were even born!

I recommend buying one of these if you aren't familiar with the great man's work.

The last one is cheapest in Target.

Hallowe'en Horror DVDs in Poundland

Breaking news from the UK!

According to Poundland's Facebook page, your local Poundland should have one of these displays by now.

The 12 titles available are:

Bride of Chucky (1998)

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Halloween II (1981)

KFZ: Kentucky Fried Zombies (2009)
- aka "Die-ner (Get It?)"

Amityville II: The Possession (1982)

Halloween III (1982) - aka "Halloween III: Season of the Witch"

Nazi Zombies (2006)
- aka "Horrors of War"

Amityville 3 (1983) - aka "Amityville III"

The Shrine (2010)

The Cellar Door (2007)

Infection (2010) - aka "Infection: The Invasion Begins"

$la$her$ (2001) - aka "Slashers"

If you buy all of them, you will have 6 well known horror movies plus 2 average ones and 4 absolutely horrible turds which you've probably never heard of before.

The ones which aren't even worth a £1 are "KFZ: Kentucky Fried Zombies", "Nazi Zombies", "The Cellar Door", and "Infection".

"The Shrine" isn't a bad movie despite being nothing to do with James Herbert's novel. It's an average clone of "The Wicker Man" and "The Ruins".

"Slashers" also might be fun for people who like "The Running Man" and similar movies in the "deadly reality TV show" subgenre.

Get them while you can!

And don't forget to point out the grammatical error on the display's header card!

My fourth and fifth auction wins on Listia!

Two more free DVDs from Listia arrived yesterday!

I Know Who Killed Me (2007)

Lindsay Lohan!

"A young girl who was missing reappears, but she claims to be someone else entirely."

I think we all know why I wanted this: LINDSAY LOHAN! She's gorgeous.

The movie itself is a bit stupid and far-fetched, but I don't even care.

And...

Unrest (2006)

"One of the 8 Films to Die For". Still sealed.

"A young pathology med student suspects that the spirit of a dead cadaver in the hospital morgue where she works is killing off all those who handle or desecrate the body."

According to the IMDb, some fuss was made about this movie at the time because it contains real dead bodies. I don't remember a thing about watching it seven years ago though. I just got it for the sake of having it for nothing.

My second and third auction wins on Listia!

I did it again! I got two more free DVDs from Listia which I really wanted.

One arrived last Friday, and the other was delivered only a few minutes ago. They make me almost happy!

Aw, who am I kidding? They make me ECSTATIC! I feel very lucky, and I'm pleased to have both in my collection.

Jacqueline Hyde (2005)

Unrated version!

Rolfe Kanefsky's B movie masterpiece starring Gabriella Hall as Jackie Hyde and BLYTHE METZ (on the left) as the titular character. Finally, I have the unrated version!
Review: here or click the picture above.

And...

Doctor Blood's Coffin (1961)

Probably a bootleg.

Sidney J. Furie's Hammer-esque Frankenstein genre movie which this very blog is named after. Having never heard of "Cheezy Flicks" before, I'm sure this is a bootleg, but I don't care! It was FREE!
Review: here or click on the picture above.

My first auction wins on Listia!

Yeah, you knew it would happen. I joined Listia to get rid of stuff and ended up getting more. I can't help it, I have a DVD collecting mental illness or something.

Anyway, my first wins arrived this morning. As you can see, I have another Echo Bridge Home Entertainment multipack of crap to review at a later date (probably next week) and a PD Laurel and Hardy film without its original case.

Here we go again!

I've already seen "Memory" (2006) and "Darkness" (2002), but I haven't seen the other four yet. That's four horror movies which I've never heard of for absolutely nothing, so where the risk? One of them might even be good.

The pack is still sealed, so it's just like having a new one. If it hadn't been offered on Listia, I probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to buy it at Kmart or anything though.

WTF is up with those fonts? Why is "THE" so different?

The second DVD obviously isn't horror. "The Flying Deuces" (1939) is now the first Laurel and Hardy movie which I've ever owned a physical copy of. I really want the "Ultimate Collection" which I've seen in Sam's Club, but it's never likely to happen because I'm poor. I don't care who knows it, I own practically nothing but DVDs, two ex-shelter cats, and four jars of toenail clippings. Woe is me!

As somebody with no sense of humour, Laurel and Hardy movies are the only things which I find funny. I have no explanation for why that is other than because they are just so perfectly timed. Maybe it's because Stan Laurel was English? I dunno.

I've already seen "The Flying Deuces" dozens of times, and it's not my favourite, but it'll have to do for now. It's actually a remake of their "Beau Hunks" short from 1931, and to be honest, I prefer the earlier version. I'm not going to review it anyway.

If you want some free stuff, click the banner below to join Listia. I will be putting some of my unwanted DVDs on there eventually, but there are thousands of DVDs on there already.

My Region 1 Non-horror DVDs

Click the picture to see it bigger and sideways.

Although I posted this a couple of days ago on my Facebook page, not everyone who reads my blog uses Facebook, and I don't want to waste the picture. Don't worry, I'm not going to go through all the titles from arche to telos as I did with my Region 1 horror DVDs.

Yeah, I know that I suck at photographing shelves full of DVDs (my camera distorts the angles of the shelves for some reason which I can't work out), but I've seen worse on Blogger. Just to make it easier to read the spines, I've also uploaded a much larger sideways view which you can see by clicking on the picture.

These aren't all my DVDs, of course, but just the Region 1 non-horror ones from my cat room. My cats do, in fact, own the entire house rather than only one room so don't go thinking that I lock them in with my cast-off DVDs or anything. Sometimes we hang out in front of the 48 inch widescreen TV in this room and watch movies together. At least we used to before Suzi started surreptitiously peeing on the futon.

Some people like these little insights into my life, and who am I to blame them? I'm awesome in every way, and I have great taste when it comes to films. As you can see from the picture, I'm not always so precise with alphabetical arrangements, especially as the top two shelves here have their own nebulous order, but I did try to tidy the bottom two a year ago. There's no reasoning behind it other than laziness.

The second shelf down is also my "movies in the process of being watched" shelf and a dumping ground for some which I'm getting rid of. Thus, there are also a few horror DVDs here which I've already reviewed. This shelf is simply at a convenient height when I'm on a marathon or sorting.

If you see any obvious movies missing, the bottom shelf of this 5 shelf bookcase (which isn't shown) used to contain my Case Logic folders full of thousands more. I moved them to a closet because Willow likes to hide on the bottom shelf when there's a storm or it's too hot.

I also have a tiny collection of VHS tapes. Add these to my various downloads, screeners, Region 2 DVD collection, and the streaming services on my Roku box, and you'll realise that I have just about every movie ever made available to me in one form or another. I'm glad that I'm not into collecting cartoons, comedies or boxsets of every TV series though. Well, not yet anyway.

The majority of these DVDs came from FYE when I had more money to waste than I do now, but several were from my pawn shop and yard sale adventures. Either way, I've still spent a small fortune on them. Five years on, they're now practically worthless. Physical media is dying out so I won't ever buy Blu-rays.

Let me know what you think in the comments section below, and also tell me about what you collect. What's the most expensive DVD that you've ever bought? And which DVD do you most regret buying?

De-hoarding My Horror DVD Multipacks: Part 1

As you can see, I've got quite a few of these Mill Creek Entertainment multipacks. In case you're wondering, there are nearly 700 movies in the picture above (give or take a few duplicated titles).

At first glance, they don't appear to take up that much space, but I have an idea about how to compact them even further. No, I'm not throwing any of them out even though most of the movies are crap and their transfers are terrible. Unfortunately, there are some movies which I haven't finished watching yet, and since I have no easy way of telling which discs they are on, I have to keep all of them until I'm done.

Of course, it'll be a red one!
What I intend to do is take out all the DVDs which are already in cardboard or paper envelopes and put them in one of those special DVD storage boxes from Target (AKA a shoebox).

I probably won't get into all the découpage and craftmaking that somebody who had the same idea before me did.

Having checked out the price of further Tyvek DVD sleeves ($5.99 for 100 on Amazon), I think this may be the ideal way to go with the rest of my collection.

Good idea? Bad idea? What do you think?

De-hoarding My Horror DVD Collection

After 5 years of actively collecting horror DVDs, the time has come to start getting rid of the ones which I'll never watch again before I end up on "Hoarders". It's a slippery slope, and I'm getting closer to sliding all the way down every time I come back from the pawn shop.

A few things have prompted my decision to do this which I'll present for you as a list. If you can identify with any of my reasons, it may be time for you to at least think about de-hoarding too.

1. I don't weigh 500 lbs so I'm not going to make "show and tell" YouTube videos of my collection.

I've never intended to create a background of shelves full of DVDs to make other people feel jealous or to compensate for the inadequacies of my own unhealthy lifestyle choices. I may eat total crap and drink far too many Monster energy drinks, but I only weigh 168 lbs (just so you know) and don't spend all day slumped in front of the television watching movies.

Owning thousands of DVDs doesn't make you a better movie fan or make you better than anyone else, it simply means that you've had more money than sense and bought more DVDs.

2. I only bought my DVDs for something to watch.

I haven't had cable or Netflix for years; I just bought DVDs to watch instead. Now that I've seen them, reviewed them, and discovered that most of them are easily available online anyway, they can go.

I don't suffer from nostalgia. My visual memory is too good. If it wasn't for this blog, I would probably never rewatch any movie.

3. A lot of horror movies are too childish.

I'm a fully grown man in my early 40s. What use are movies about American teenagers to me?

Since I'm English, I barely identified with the protagonists even when I was the same age. Americans in movies come across as coddled children compared to people from other countries, and they disgust me. To be honest, my entertainment pleasure has started to come from watching entitled idiots get hacked to death or eaten rather than enjoying the story. Unfortunately, that leaves me even more frustrated as such wish fulfillment never comes true.

Pretty/stupid people who get everything handed to them on a plate will continue to dominate the planet for the rest of time. Bumping them off in horror movies only works for a short while before it becomes as irritating as real life itself.

4. I'm bored with horror movies anyway.

During my years of reviewing horror movies, I've seen the quality drop further and further every year. It's now got to the point where I could sum up any new horror movie with a couple of expletives rather than an erudite explanation. Although it's indicative of my far more realistic rental store conversations, it doesn't make very interesting reading.

"So what's this one like?"

"Complete and utter shit."

See what I mean?

It's not because of nostalgia or trying vainly to chase the fear buzz from my childhood, but simply because expectations have become lower right across the board. No effort goes into even trying to make anything original whether it be big-budget Hollywood blockbusters or low-budget, Wal-mart camcorder nasties. People have become so used to a diet of shit that new shit doesn't taste so bad to them anymore. It still does to me though.

Horror movies are nothing but formulas, clones, and remakes. Change the locations and the character names, and it's the same half-dozen stories over and over again with greater or lesser production values than before. It's product not art. It never really was art anyway.

5. I want the space back.

Having a lot of DVDs takes up too much room. I'd rather have the clean space to move in than rows and rows of dust catchers.

Being a "museum curator" of a load of old tat was never part of the plan.

6. One day I'll be going back to England.

Unless I have a huge yard sale, I've got to transport all these DVDs back home. It wasn't so bad bringing the ones I already had over, but now it's got silly. Even with lots more Case Logic folders, the excess baggage charges would be ridiculous.

Having moved four times since I've been living in America, I've had enough of packing and unpacking all these boxes of plastic and paper.

7. Horror DVDs are worthless.

If DVDs weren't worthless, I wouldn't have got them from the pawn shops, bargain bins, and yard sales. Even though I have great taste and discernment in all things, it doesn't make my DVDs worth any more second-hand. I'll be lucky to get $2 for each one at my own yard sale.

Even Blu-rays are worthless. From the moment you've bought them, you'll never get back what you paid for them even if you never open them (unless you have a valid reason for a refund). Everything is streaming or (illegally) downloadable from torrent sites so hardly anyone buys physical media.

8. I don't identify with the cliques.

I don't belong to any clubs, online forums (other than my own), or go to conventions so I'm not what you could ever call a "fan" as such. Apart from some aberrations in my past when I tried to force myself into fitting in, I never have done. In every case, it ended badly. I rub people up the wrong way because I speak my mind, don't support "hobby horror"... and I'm not social.

At the end of the day, I'm just some guy who watches a lot of movies and may have seen some that you have. I've never collected DVDs to be part of the gang.

9. I'm getting older and grumpier.

As I've got older, I've had less and less in common with other so-called "horror fans" to the point where I know how to work the system just enough to cause me to despise everyone else. For example, if I make a Facebook post or Tweet about "Girly", it'll go unnoticed, but if I post a picture of a Critter, a Jason mask or a Freddy glove, voila, all the "likes" and "retweets" bring the lowest common denominators out of the woodwork, and it sickens me. You bunch of easily-led plebs! You know who you are.

Even taking other people's ages into consideration is no excuse. There may well be new horror fans sprouting up every day who haven't seen certain movies and think that everything is cool, but the stuff that the gormless, hipster douchebags rave about is the only aspect which horrifies me. You can shove those generic Bumhole (Blumhouse) Productions, zombies, slashers, horror-comedies, and faux "found footage" movies where the sun doesn't shine!

Mid-life crisis? Maybe. But I think I had that when I was 33, briefly. It's taken a very long time, but I've been growing-up and further away from what used to interest me every day since. I never did like Critters, Jason or Freddy though.

10. I have nothing better to write about. Horror movie blogging is dead.

Unless you are a sell-out like the big name horror sites or you have a novelty gimmick like being morbidly obese or a girl (although there are far too many girl horror bloggers/vloggers for that to make as much difference as it used to), nobody other than the occasional nerdy "man-child" cares about horror blogs or movie reviewers. Too many people are doing it, and 99% of them just write out the stories in their own words and slap a couple of pictures up.

After becoming totally dissatisfied with the lack of discernment, ability, and journalistic integrity among "movie reviewers", I don't read anyone else's blogs nowadays. I've also just wiped the GFC widget (which Google/Blogger is phasing out in favour of Google+). Although I keep getting thousands of pageviews every day, nobody actually reads or comments my blog either so what's the point of writing it? Monetisation? Yeah, the 37¢ that I make each year through affiliate links makes so much difference.

Anyway, in the coming series of occasional posts which I'm writing for my own cathartic benefit, I'll be posting pictures of my de-hoarding process as and when it happens. If you still like to live vicariously through blogs, you might even find some amusement here... especially as I'm going to bitch like never before about the DVDs which I'm getting rid of.

Dr Blood's Big Day Out 2013

My "Big Day Out" for this year actually took place over Friday and Saturday, but what with one thing and another, I was too exhausted to write about it until today. I walked miles with the sweat pouring off me, got almost boiled alive by the humidity, and really had enough of going through rows and rows of dusty DVDs. There comes a point when you realise that you already have far too many DVDs and it's time to stop, especially when the pawn shops now have less horror DVDs than you do at home.

As you know, I used to love going round the pawn shops to see what I could find and usually tried to hit them whenever I had an abundance of "internet money" (from Amazon affiliate sales or whatever). Basically, it was like getting free DVDs so that I could do more blogging.

For those of you seeking online entertainment through my rants, you already know that I hate most of the DVDs I get. Somebody else hated them enough to flip them in the first place too. Unfortunately, with affiliate sales and blog traffic at an all time low right across the board, I haven't had one of these "Pawn Shop Adventures" for quite some time. I'm far from rich (at the moment) so most of my money goes on necessities such as Monster energy drinks, Funyuns, and cat food. Admittedly, I probably need to do something about my Monster addiction, but it stops my migraines. It's also a pity that cats can't eat Funyuns. At least we can share the tins of Friskies.

Anyway, here's what I got this time:

I know, I know... I said that I wasn't going to buy more "Midnight Horror" DVDs, but at $2.50 each (as part of a 4 for $10 deal) for another 16 movies, why not?

In the first pack, I have "Night of the Living Dead" (for the 15th time!), "Keepsake", "My Sweet Killer", "Interview with a Serial Killer", "Final Remains", "Dark Woods", and "Colour from the Dark". Other than "Night of the Living Dead", I have no idea what these will be like.

In the "Hatchets & Cleavers" pack, I have "Dirt Boy", "The Ridge", "Green River", "Animal Room", "Followed Home", "Loaded", "Hollywood Scarefest", and "The Killing Mind". The fact that I can't even find some of these titles on the IMDb doesn't bode well.

I've been intrigued by the Cutting Edge Cinema/Extreme collections from R Squared Films since they came out last year, but I have a feeling that they'll just be handycam crap. I wouldn't buy the one with zombies on it anyway. In this case, I now have "Extreme Monsters" which is made up of "Closet Space", "Dreams of the Dead", "Evil Offspring", "Little Red Devil", "Spirits of the Fall", "The Whistler", "Where the Dogs Divide Her" (I like the sound of this one!), and "They Must Eat". The DVD case was damaged (the clear plastic was completely gone), but the artwork is still perfect so I'll just put everything in a new double DVD case if the movies are any good... which I doubt.

I bought another Echo Bridge Home Entertainment 8 pack just to break up the monotony of horror even though three (maybe four) of the movies may be horror in this "Action Thrillers" set. Some of these I already have or have already seen: "The Faculty" (already have with "Phantoms"), "The Hole" (already seen), "Animal Room" (is on the other 8 pack above), "The Lookout", "Living in Peril", "The Road Killers" (really good Christopher Lambert movie), "Two Hands", and "The I Inside" (which sounds familiar to me for some reason).

From the more expensive "DVD and Games Exchange Store" next door, I found the newer "Special Collector's Edition" of "Pet Sematary" because I lost my older copy anyway. I wrote about how I lost it ages ago, and I still haven't found it. They also had the older version for the same $5 price, but I chose this one. The older version has the same artwork as the VHS but doesn't have Mary Lambert's commentary on it.

And finally, last and very least, I have a new double-pack of coasters to replace the "Halloween" coaster that I had to throw away after using it to scrape dried cat shit off the floor. Call me wasteful, but that's how I roll. I get used to things being a certain way, and using Rob Zombie's "Halloween" as a coaster for my cold Monster energy drinks is just one of the things that makes me special.

I finished my adventure off with a half-day at the local "Riverfest" where I ate a burger and three "Hello Kitty" ice lollies. I know you don't care about that (nor do I really), but here's the scan of two of the "Popsicle" wrappers because I'm a hoarder and they were still in my pocket when I got home.

Now it's time to start watching all these movies.

Is there anything worth watching in the Redbox kiosk?

Last night I went out shopping and, for the first time in months, I had a quick look through what was new in the Redbox kiosk at my local grocery store. I'm sad to say that I was very disappointed by what I found. I've already reviewed the better known movies so there was only a 50/50 chance that I would find something to justify wasting even a dollar on anyway.

Since I'm not one of those people with a super-duper smartphone, I had no internet access available to me and just had to judge the titles by what their artwork looked like rather than the description available online. We've all been burnt by lurid cover art which promises more from a movie than it could ever deliver, but when it looks as generic as the current offerings, it's also a sure sign that the movie will be exactly what it claims to be.

Thanks Tardar Sauce, you took the words right out of my mouth.

Call it instinct or discernment, but I'm really glad that I had to wait until I got home and could compare http://www.redbox.com/browse/horror-movies#format=dvd with their low ratings on the IMDb before parting with my money. It's not that I usually trust the IMDb anyway when it comes to the higher scores (which have been boosted by shills and 12 year olds who shouldn't be allowed internet access until they turn 30), but because these were all so low, I'm inclined to believe them. The days of trusting to luck with a new horror movie are long since over for any of us.

I'm not going to go through all the Redbox horror movies as you are quite capable of doing that for yourself, but I will say something about a few which caught my eye and almost caused me to swipe my credit card through the slot.

The Millennium Bug (2011)

Apparently, the big selling point is that no CGI was used in this movie, but I'm not interested in bugs, hillbillies, B-movies or anything about it whatsoever. I've never heard of anyone in it or associated with it so I'm never going to watch it. The IMDb rating is only 5.1 right now, but I'm sure it will drop even further.

Hayride (2012)

Just from the artwork, it looks like a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" clone so I'll pass. The IMDb rates it as 3.6.

The Dead Reborn (?)

This doesn't even exist on the IMDb because it's some kind of cobbled together anthology made out of three old movies by Full Moon. Without even seeing it, I can easily rate it as a 0 out of 10 and stand by that no matter what happens. The picture of a pram on the cover put me off straight away.

Home Sweet Home (2013)

Let's see now, it's a psychological thriller not a horror movie. It stars nobody I've ever heard of, and it's an independent film. Nope. Nothing for me here.

House Hunting (2013)

This one tempted me the most because it looks like a haunted house movie of some kind. The IMDb gives it 4.7 and the reviews suggest that this is a "Dead End" clone with a similar twist. So why bother? It's got Marc Singer in it who was TV famous in the '80s for "V", but that's about all.

Night of the Living Dead: Resurrection (2012)

Wait... "Resurrection"??? Oh, how cunning. Not Romero. Set in Wales. No, thank you. The IMDb gives it 3.0.

I could go on, but really what's the point? Apart from a load of Full Moon and The Asylum junk, there's nothing but more zombies, slashers/home invasions, apocalyptic viruses, and a couple of antichrist movies all made by nobodies with no budget and no talent.

Tomorrow, if I get bored enough, I'll start reviewing all the multipacks that I've bought but never watched.

Feel free to let me know if there's anything in the Redbox kiosks which you've took a chance on and found to be good.

More money than sense?

I've seen some stupid things on YouTube in my time (and, no, I'm not talking about Giovanna Plowman), but this guy's purchase of 100 Blu-ray discs has to be up there with the most ridiculous of them.

What could be missing in someone's life that he has to buy 100 (or more) movies in one go with most of them being bad ones that he's already seen and doesn't like? I don't get it. Out of 100 Blu-ray discs in this video, there are possibly only a dozen decent horror films. The rest should be thrown onto a bonfire to do the world a favour.

Far be it from me to criticise anyone for collecting DVDs, but why collect crappy movies on Blu-ray especially when you already have them on DVD? It's not going to make them any better!

How much do you think this lot cost? Somewhere between $500 and $1000 probably. What a waste of money! I would rather buy 100 crappy horror movies in a Mill Creek pack from Wal-mart for $17.99 and spend the rest on pizza and beer.

Big Lots Hallowe'en Horror DVDs 2012

I went to Big Lots again yesterday. I was going to buy a new fan heater, but the day was so warm and humid that I decided it could wait a while longer. Since I was there and the Hallowe'en displays were enticing me, I had a look through their latest DVDs so that I could report back about anything good.

As you can see (above), I found "Frankenstein: The True Story" (1973) and "Teeth" (2007) for $3 each. A couple of years ago, I bought "Terror of Frankenstein" (1977) in one of the "3 for $3" packs by mistake and was horrified that it was such a boring piece of crap. I really wanted "Frankenstein: The True Story" all along. and now of course, I have it.

Although I reviewed "Teeth" a couple of years ago too, I didn't have a copy of it before. I almost bought it from FYE's "sidewalk sale" for the same price, but I'm glad that I saved my money. I'd rather spend my money in Big Lots than FYE anyway after being charged rip-off prices by them in the past. plus I have issues with their current management which goes back to how they were so greedy that they put their entire staff in danger by not closing during a "State of Emergency" three winters ago. Was it worth it to stay open for another four hours with no customers around or to lose a customer who was spending over $200 every week in their store until that time because their greed disgusted him? I think not. I still look in FYE occasionally, but that particular store will never get another penny from me.

Anyway, I suppose you want to know what else Big Lots had in their orange "Halloween DVD" boxes? I made a list just for you:

Thus, there were some bargains and some not-quite-so-good bargains. There weren't a lot of newer horror movies, as most were restocks of DVDs which they had before. Some were only the old full screen versions, so you have to be careful.

If you have the "Nightmare on Elm Street" 4 film packs for $10 each from Target then the single disc versions aren't really worth having. "Hostel" was overpriced too, since it was previously sold in Big Lots for $3 not very long ago.

If you are thinking of buying a lot of these titles and have a Big Lots loyalty card, it might be wise to wait until the next "Friends and Family" night on October 7th, 2012, to save yourself some more money.

Horror DVDs which I don't have in my collection - part 1

While going through my Region 1 horror DVDs, I highlighted some of the films which I haven't bought on DVD yet. There's actually quite a difference between the best titles in the Video Vault and the ones which I have a physical copy of.

Of course, there are several good reasons why I don't own a copy of every horror movie ever made including having limited space, not being a millionaire, having no interest in the bad ones, but, most of all, because there are a lot of movies which I would probably never watch again anyway.

In the following (very occasional) series of posts, I'll go through the horror DVDs which I have never bought and explain why they are missing from my collection.

1. Angel Heart (1987)

Even though this film was a big relief from all the stupid comedy-horrors and mindless slashers of the '80s, like every story with a twist, you can really only watch it once. Having said that, the main reason why I don't have it in my collection is because it feels like an extended pop video to me. The transitions between some of the scenes are particularly bad and a lot of the reasons why (and how) Harry Angel goes from point A to point B don't make a whole lot of sense either even with repeated viewings. Of course, if I ever find it cheap enough I'll pick up a copy, but it's not something which I'm desperate for.

2. The Blob (1988)

I have seen this several times in FYE's used sections so I guess that it isn't considered such a great film anymore. I remembered "The Blob" remake as being really good at the time especially as I saw it on TV and never had to rent it. I always intended to rewatch it sometime when I was in the right mood for it. Unfortunately, it was shown on one of the American cable channels when I still had cable and, although I missed the start, I watched enough of it to see that it was more of a kids' movie than an adult horror. It was typically '80s, it made me cringe, and I was ashamed to have once liked it so it's almost a certainty that I will never buy "The Blob" on DVD now.

3. Daughters of Darkness (1971)

I stayed up really late at night in the early '80s to watch this on the new TVS channel when it first took over from Southern. When I got to school the next day, I found out that a friend of mine had done exactly the same thing and talked for ages about this seemingly obscure movie which we were sure that nobody else but us had seen. Of course, we were both naive and stupidly young so this seemed like an erotic European masterpiece at the time. Having watched it again fairly recently via Netflix, it was terribly slow and languid with a subtext which I still can't quite work out. In truth, it bored me so I won't buy it.

4. Half Light (2006)

I really want a copy of "Half Light" but every time one turns up in the pawn shops or FYE, it's always in an ex-rental case with all the stickers, tears and other damage. I don't particularly want to buy it new even though I like Demi Moore a lot and the British setting makes it rock somewhat. It's possible that I'd only watch it one more time anyway before it got consigned to rot in its box for the rest of eternity, but I'm still hopeful that a copy will turn up which I find acceptable.

5. The Innocents (1961)

This is another ghost story which I've only ever seen at a stupid price in FYE so I chose to rent it from Netflix instead of buying it. It's a great film, has a really creepy atmosphere to make up for the shortcomings of the dialogue, but I just can't justify the $14.99 price tag (or, worse, the $36.99 Blu-ray!) especially for something in black and white. I know I could get it from Amazon or eBay far cheaper, but I always forget to search for it when I'm on either site.

6. The Legacy (1978)

I've never seen "The Legacy" available to buy anywhere except online so I may have to give in and order it. I've always liked this film although, with it being another DVD which I rented from Netflix, I wasn't too impressed with the transfer and weird stretches of some of the scenes to widescreen. I highly doubt that there'll ever be a better version or some kind of fully restored Blu-ray edition, but I've seen it so many times that I can hold off buying it just in case. Of course, if a copy turns up in the pawn shop or FYE's used section then I'll probably get it even with its current flaws.

7. Let the Right One In (2008)

Not including the CGI cats, this was much better than the unnecessary and crappy Americanised remake, but I still haven't bought my own copy. It has come and gone several times in my local pawn shop due to my own ignorance about the barcode numbers. There were errors with the subtitles on the original run of DVDs and so, because they both look the same (and knowing my luck), I'd most likely end up with one of the bad ones and not the newer pressings. I'm very wary about buying this as a Region 1 DVD and I have no intention of learning Swedish.

8. Lust for a Vampire (1971)

Simply because I've seen all the Hammer movies so many times every year on television from when I was young to the time I left Britain, I really don't think that I'd ever watch this again even if I had it in my collection. Knowing how Yutte Stensgaard became ashamed of ever being in it really put the dampers on my enthusiasm for this film and, as a big fan of Ralph Bates when he was in "Dear John", it makes me sad to see him in anything now that he's dead. I know it's mostly irrational because many of the films I watch have dead actors in them, but that's just how I roll.

9. Monkey Shines (1988)

I've got a feeling that this is out of print because there's no other reason why it should be $19.99 from Amazon. If I ever see "Monkey Shines" for $5 or less (especially if it's in a multi-pack) then I'll buy it. I used to have it on VHS back in Britain and watched it probably half a dozen times over the years. I like little monkeys and Ella was great in this but I'm not going to pay a premium price for a nearly twenty-five year old George A. Romero film now.

10. The New Daughter (2009)

Basically, as much as I loved "The New Daughter" and the director's commentary, I'll never buy it because of the gratuitous cat death. I found it completely unnecessary and clichéd. The plot wasn't the most original either as it was much the same as "Inhabited" (2003). I believe the same story has been repeated since in another film which I've completely forgotten the name of for now but it's bound to come back to me once I finish writing this post. (Edit: Nope, I still can't remember.)

Those are the horror DVDs which are most obviously missing from my current collection. There are a couple more movies which don't even exist on Region 1 DVD yet but I'll do a completely new article about those eventually.

Next time, I'm going to write a list of the Region 1 DVDs which I will never buy, never want, and if I was ever given them, I would just throw away. I bet you can't wait to read that one!

Dr Blood's Big Day Out

The hot weather came back with a vengeance yesterday. I think it was over 95 degrees again and the forecast says that there is another week of this awfulness to come. It's pretty much killing me, destroying my concentration, and, most importantly, it's really disrupting my blogging.

Instead of going down to the basement, sitting in a corner and crying (which is what I felt like doing), I went out for an adventure. As you know, I don't like to leave the house or the cats on Saturdays (or most other days of the week for that matter) except to go to the pawn shop so you can guess where I went.

Yes, I went to the pawn shop again... but also to a few other places as well.

Finally! "Jennifer's Body" turned up! I'd been refusing to buy this from Wal-mart since it came out because the price never dropped below $10 for it. This movie is three years old so it should have been in the $5 bin ages ago. Now I have it and for only $2.50 too.

"The Midnight Horror Collection - Vol. 2" from Echo Bridge Home Entertainment was definitely in the Wal-mart $5 bin but I could never find it. I only collect the ones labelled "Midnight Horror" and not the "Masters of Terror" multi-packs.

Nearly all of the "Masters of Terror" collections are culled from the bigger 4, 5, 6 (and 11) movie Miramax franchise multi-packs but repackaged with a lot of crap from the earlier "4 Horror Films" collector's sets. The "Midnight Horror" multi-packs also contain a few titles from those earlier packs (especially volumes 4 to 6 which repackage all of them) but, since I never bought the final "4 Horror Films" collector's set, this had nothing on it which I've ever seen before. The titles are "Haunted From Within", "Doll Graveyard", "Watch Me", "The Fear Chamber", "Deadfall Trail", "Zombie Dearest", "Demonic Toys 2", and "Evil Bong 2: King Bong". I won't be buying the third volume because it double-dips 5 movies from the first two volumes and only adds three more really crappy ones.

I wish I had a better excuse for buying "Memoirs of a Geisha" other than it's probably the kind of thing which my mum would have watched if she hadn't died of cancer nine years ago. She used to watch all the period romances and she would have really liked this one. She worked in a Japanese hotel until four months before the end and she loved it there for some bizarre reason.

Apart from eating a lot of sushi, I'm not a big Japanophile. I do like all the Japanese people who I've met in real life and, yesterday, I went to a new Japanese restaurant to try it out so that's another reason why I bought "Memoirs of a Geisha".

Just to complete the "4 for $10" deal, I grabbed this "Pulp Fiction" Collector's Edition. It's a 2 disc set in that strange hybrid packaging of plastic and cardboard which things like the Universal Legacy Collection, "Unbreakable", and "Unforgiven" came out in. I think I may have a few more movies which were released like this but I don't remember which ones right now. I've already seen this movie dozens of times but my cats haven't.

That wasn't the end of my day. I also went to Target, looked through the DVDs, and bought absolutely nothing there. There wasn't anything new, no bargains apart from "Orphan" for $5, and I still didn't get that new Melissa George film since it turned out not to be horror after all.

I then went to Wilson Farms and bought two large tubs of Neopolitan ice cream since they had a "buy one get one free" deal going on. I didn't have to have Neopolitan but that's the only Perry's one I like even though the strawberry part has little bits of strawberry in it. I can't stand ice cream with bits in it.

So, that was my big day out. The heat and humidity was so oppressive that, when I came home, I was exhausted and had to go to bed early with the ceiling fan on full blast. If I hadn't woke up with toothache, I'd still be there completely oblivious to this Hellish weather. Sleeping is the only escape I have from this nightmare.

My Region 1 Horror DVDs - part 13

The Fifth Shelf - part D

Well, this is it. The final part of the last shelf full of my Region 1 horror DVDs has come. Are you sad about it? I know I'm not. It's not the last time that I'll be posting parts of my collection anyway, but I will never, ever, EVER, go through them all like this again.

Since I've already made posts about all of my Mill Creek Entertainment packs over the last two years (I have them all, just so you know), it's fortunate that I only have two of them on this shelf and I don't think I ever reviewed the second one.

As you can see from the picture on the right, between them I have two old Brentwood (BCI) "4 Movies" packs from FYE which I don't think that I've written anything about either. All the EastWestDVD double-features at the end, I covered last year in my "I bought that for a dollar" bargain DVDs series but I'll still say something about them again because I can.

Okay, time to finally get this monkey off my back as I go through to the end of the shelf.

Chilling 20 Movie Pack
I've already got a post about this so I'll just repeat that if you only buy one Mill Creek Entertainment horror multi-pack in your life, this should be the one you get. Nearly all the Public Domain greats are here including "Dementia 13", "The House on Haunted Hill", "The Last Man on Earth", "The Little Shop of Horrors", "Maniac", "Moon of the Wolf", "Night of the Living Dead", "Snowbeast" and "The Terror". If only it had "Carnival of Souls", "Nosferatu" and "City of the Dead", you wouldn't need to buy any more. You can download those or watch them on YouTube for free anyway. I'm a big supporter of Mill Creek Entertainment's products so I recommend that you treat yourself to at least a 50 pack sometime as well. Wal-mart and Target always have good deals on them.

Ghost Stories
"Dominique Is Dead", "Death at Love House", "The Invisible Ghost", and "Carnival of Souls". Basically, another four VHS transfers of Public Domain movies. The weakest link is "The Invisible Ghost" although even that has a better than usual performance by Bela Lugosi.

Horror Rises from the Grave
"Horror Rises from the Tomb", "Zombie Flesh Eaters", "Zombie Hell House", and "Night of the Ghoul". Quite a mixture of quality here with the standouts being "The House by the Cemetery" (aka "Zombie Hell House") in widescreen and "The Ghoul" (aka "Night of the Ghoul") for everyone who loves British horror. If you've never seen "The Ghoul", the recent remake of "The Wolfman" borrowed heavily from it. The weakest link is Paul Naschy's "Horror Rises from the Tomb" but it's still entertaining.

12 Movies - Gorehouse Greats Collection
"Blood Mania", "Blood of Dracula's Castle", "Brain Twisters", "The Devil's Hand", "The Madmen of Mandoras", "Nightmare in Wax", "Prime Evil", "Satan's Slave", "Stanley", "Terrified", "Terror", and "Trip with the Teacher". Only $5 from Wal-mart and worth every penny since I still haven't watched all these movies. Standouts are "Trip with the Teacher" which is a lot like "The Last House on the Left", and "Satan's Slave" for all those people who think that "House of the Devil" was so original. Depending on what you are in the mood for, there aren't really any weak links apart from the quality of the transfers.

Double-feature - Moon of the Wolf / Snowbeast
Very much a staple of the Public Domain DVD distributors. If you collect PD discs, you'll have these two films a dozen times. At least these are in colour. All my EastWest DVDs came from a dollar supermarket which no longer exists but you'll find them in most dollar stores.

Double-feature - The Ghost / Nightmare Castle
A couple of Italian Barbara Steele movies. Not bad either.

Double-feature - Picture Mommy Dead / Murder Mansion
These are thrillers not horrors although they are dated enough to be awful to watch.

Double-feature - Vault of Horror / Frightmare
One good one and one which makes you wonder what the Hell you are watching. I won't say which is which, you can decide that for yourself.

Double-feature - Invisible Ghost / White Zombie
An obligatory Bela Lugosi double bill which I don't particularly care for.

Penny Dreadful
Not the Rachel Miner one from the "After Dark Horrorfest" but the far superior short starring Emily Vaughan. I bought my copy through eBay from the director, Bryan Norton, who signed it before sending it to me. I don't know for sure, but I expect he's still selling them.

Horror Express
This is the Digiview version which I found in Dollar Tree. I have a slightly better version in one of my Mill Creek packs.

That's it. That's really it! Such an anticlimax, but at least I'm free to watch some more horror films and do some real reviews again now.

I'm going to take a break now since I'm expecting another day with a temperature of 95 degrees and tomorrow is a big shopping day (I mean "holiday") which I intend to make the most of.

If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below.

My Region 1 Horror DVDs - part 12

The Fifth Shelf - part C

Of course, Echo Bridge Home Entertainment aren't the only company to be distributing horror multi-packs. At the present time, the other big players are Lionsgate, Universal, and, of course, Mill Creek Entertainment.

During my regular visits to Wal-mart, Target and Kmart (which I tend to hit one after another), I've encountered quite a few multi-packs, multi-features, or whatever you want to call them. Some have been better than others and quite a few haven't interested me at all.

If you surf YouTube in search of horror DVD collectors, you will see some people with so many DVDs that you'll be almost drooling at their apparent wealth. If you look closer at the movie titles, however, you will see that most of these people have no discernment and 90% of their collections are made up of total rubbish which you probably haven't even heard of. The only reason their collections are so big is because they've bought every movie individually no matter what it was.

As you know by now, I'm a bit different to those guys. I prefer good horror movies not the trashy ones, and, through my abstinence, I've been able to get some fantastic bargains as the trend towards horror multi-packs has taken off.

In this post, I will quickly go through some of the better movie packs from the bigger names.

Lionsgate 4-Film Pack 1
"Drive Thru", "Creep", "Boy Eats Girl", and "Tamara". This was one of the first Lionsgate "4-Film" packs other than some conflated "After Dark Horrorfest" multi-features. It was also exclusive to Wal-mart as far as I know and easily found in their $5 bargain bin. As with all these sets, they weren't silly enough to give away a premium title or an above average movie but this selection really isn't too bad at all. "Drive Thru" is the weakest link but you don't have to watch it. The production values are pretty decent throughout these movies so you definitely won't feel cheated should you ever buy this yourself.

Lionsgate 4-Film Pack 2
"Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings", "Leprechaun", "Wishmaster", and "Wishmaster 2: Evil Never Dies". I sold my double-feature of "Wishmaster" and "Wishmaster 2" the day after I found this in Wal-mart's $5 bin. The weak link here is "Pumpkinhead II" but you know that they weren't going to put a premium title on here even if they owned the rights to it. Lionsgate also have a four pack of "Leprechaun" movies for $5 which I know a lot of you own. I didn't buy it because I only like the first one and that was in this pack anyway.

Haunting - As Seen on the Discovery Channel
"A Haunting in Georgia" and "A Haunting in Connecticut". This is by Echo Bridge and was out of order on my bottom shelf but I'll say something about it anyway. Both these TV movies are way better than "A Haunting in Connecticut" which I rented and hated. I seriously got creeped out by the original Discovery Channel version and highly recommend this DVD. As ever, there is another Echo Bridge Triple-Pack available with "Haunting of Winchester House" in it as well for the same $5 price. I didn't think it was a very good movie so I don't feel that I lost out by not having it.

Universal - 4 Cult Horror Movies
"The Funhouse", "Phantasm II", "The Serpent and the Rainbow", and "Sssssss". Seriously, Universal, what's the deal here with "Phantasm II" and not "Phantasm"? This is one of the weirder collections with even less of a linking theme than Lionsgate could come up with. All of these are pretty good movies for $5 though and, again, seem to be exclusive to Wal-mart's bargain bin or online purchases. "Sssssss" is known as "Sssnake" in the UK.

Universal - 4 Horror Movies
"Slither", "Altered", "Cry-Wolf", and "The Return". I was very pleased to get this pack especially as I sold my copies of "Cry-Wolf" (nothing to do with werewolves, by the way) and "The Return" at a yard sale. I still have "Slither" double-dipped but never had "Altered" so it saves a bit of space. There isn't really much of a linking theme with any of these movies either except for being in the same genre and even that is debatable.

Universal - 4 Dark Comedies
"Serial Mom", "Nurse Betty", "Very Bad Things", and "Your Friends & Neighbours". As far as movies go, this is pure gold but I only wanted it for the first movie and the third. Fangoria did an article about "Serial Mom" so it counts as horror, albeit a horror-comedy, and "Very Bad Things" is definitely the darkest of dark humour. For $5, I'm even tempted to give "Nurse Betty" a try.

After Dark Horrorfest III
"Autopsy", "The Broken", "Slaughter", "The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations", "Perkin's 14", "Dying Breed", "From Within", and "Voices". Back to Lionsgate again with this $5 pack, this really is the way that all the "After Dark Horrorfest" movies should have been released. There are two other conflated packs of the worst of the first two horrorfests which I admit that I was tempted by. I still haven't watched all these movies yet, I think I have three and a half to go, but they are very below average and instantly forgettable.

Just by browsing the DVD shelves in your local Wal-mart, Target or Kmart, you will see dozens more of these multi-feature packs. If you are new to collecting, these really are a very good place to start.

Only Echo Bridge are a bit of a fly in the ointment by releasing the same movies across many different packs with only one or two changes, but every company has been guilty of the same sneakiness even Warner Brothers with their "4 Film Favorites" packs.

A couple of years ago, the end-caps in Wal-mart were full of some of the strangest combinations of horror movies with other movies which I have ever seen. I didn't buy them and forget who put them out, but I'd bet money on it being MGM or 20th Century Fox in a desperate attempt to claw back some money and test the market for potential blu-ray triple-features which are, indeed, starting to appear now.

Whether a movie is on blu-ray or a standard DVD, if it's a crappy movie, it will still be a crappy movie no matter what format it's on. My advice, for what it's worth, is to be very careful with the multi-packs and try not to end up with too many copies of "Gothika" and "Dreamcatcher", okay?

My Region 1 Horror DVDs - part 11

The Fifth Shelf - part B

If you've been reading my previous posts, I'm sure there are some of you who are thinking, "Hey, you don't have [insert name of horror movie here]. Why is that, bro?" or, even, "Hahaha, you think you are some kind of horror movie expert or something, but you don't even have a copy of [insert name of really crappy or obscure horror movie here]. You suck."

As for the latter, you haven't seen inside my Region 2 Case Logic folders or even my screener folders yet (nor will you because none of us have lives long enough for that series of blog posts to happen).

The simpler answer to the former, however, is that I've been buying a lot of multi-packs (is "multipacks" without a hyphen a word? My spell checker doesn't think so).

To cut a long story short, if I can get at least four movies for the price of one, the single DVD purchase isn't going to happen.

Owing to the number of titles on these packs, I have divided up the second half of the bottom shelf into another three parts. This post will be about my Echo Bridge Home Entertainment horror multi-packs, all of which came from my local pawn shop.

From left to right, not that it matters because the spines are fairly similar, here we go again.

4 Films - Vampire Collector's Set
"Shadow Zone: The Undead Express", "Vampire Wars: The Battle for the Universe", "Nadja" and "The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire". This really sucks (no pun intended) as in "this is the worst collection of vampire movies I have ever seen". This was the first of these packs which I ever bought and I diligently watched every movie.

4 Films - Horror Collector's Pack
"Kraken: Tentacles of the Deep", "Howling IV: The Original Nightmare", "Night Shadow", and "Raging Sharks". I have, unfortunately, watched all these movies too now. It's not the worst of these packs but nothing here would rate more than a 3 out of 10.

4 Films - Horror Collector's Pack 2
"Hindsight", "Night of the Living Dead", "Razor Eaters", and "Cruel World". Is it just me or has nobody on the planet even heard of any of these movies apart from "Night of the Living Dead"? I haven't watched this DVD yet but I can almost taste how awful it will be.

4 Films - Horror Collector's Pack 3
"Live Animals", "Roman", "Wages of Sin", and "Skeleton Man". Nope, I haven't watched any of these yet either. I've heard of "Roman" before but that's it.

4 Films - Horror Collector's Pack 4
"Bloody Mary", "Mortuary", "Memory", and "Salvage". Things improved with this pack since I've heard of Tobe Hooper's "Mortuary" before (in a bad way) and I know that "Salvage" was filmed on the old set of "Brookside" (if I'm thinking of the right film). Have I watched them yet? Nope.

The Midnight Horror Collection - Bloody Slashers
"Hoboken Hollow", "Secrets of the Clown", "Room 33", and "Curtains". I've watched two of these so far, "Hoboken Hollow" (which I've reviewed on here) and "Curtains". Maybe I'll finish this DVD one day but I don't hold out much hope for the quality of the other two films.

The Midnight Horror Collection - Road Trip to Hell
"The Craving", "Sheltered", "Hell's Highway", and "Feeding Grounds". I've watched the first two and they weren't totally awful so this pack still holds the most promise for me.

The Midnight Horror Collection - Blood Predators
"The Vampire Conspiracy", "Fist of the Vampire", "Curse of the Wolf", and "Bachelor Party in the Bungalow of the Damned". I've watched part of the last movie from this set just to see Zoe Hunter get nude. It wasn't a pleasant movie and I now have a feeling that the others will all be handycam crap as well.

8 Movies - Midnight Horror
"Night of the Living Dead", "Windcroft", "Interview with a Serial Killer", "Dark Woods", "Keepsake", "My Sweet Killer", "Final Remains", and "Colour from the Dark". I haven't even opened this yet because I've only just got it. Obviously, I've already seen "Night of the Living Dead" but that is all.

8 Movie Pack - The Midnight Horror Collection
"The Legend of Sorrow Creek", "Prom Night", "Below", "I Am Omega", "Evil Bong", "Meridian", "Demonic Toys", and "Decadent Evil". So far, I've already seen "Prom Night", "Below", "Meridian" (known as "Phantoms" in the UK), and part of "Demonic Toys". "Below" and "Meridian" were good.

The trouble with these Echo Bridge packs, although not so much now that they are distributing Miramax's back catalogue, is that you often get one average film and a load of below average crap just to fill up the set.

They also swap titles from one volume to another so randomly that, if you were to buy every Echo Bridge collection, you would probably end up with 6 copies of "Night of the Living Dead" (and God knows how many copies of everything else) just to get one extra movie.

I have only collected the packs which gave me the least amount of repetition so I don't have them all. If Echo Bridge were to create some real "volumes" with no repeated titles, I think most people would be a lot happier and would buy them all for completeness. I know I would.
