Dead Silence (2007)

"A widower returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife's murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a murdered ventriloquist."

I took my time over getting round to watching this. After all the annoying MySpace promotions about it, I wanted this to be bad and to really have something to get my teeth into here, but I ended up quite liking it.

"Dead Silence" is predictable as could be. Every scare and jump scene is telegraphed and most of the dialogue is pretty awful too, but it's nicely filmed and has a genuine creepiness about it that works if you're in the right frame of mind for it.

The dolls themselves don't really do a lot, but the ghost of their owner is suitably scary in a "Toothfairy" kind of way. Yes, this has a lot of similarities to "Darkness Falls", but it's done a hell of a lot better. For one thing, whoever did the set dressing was very talented indeed.

I really liked the twist at the end too. The backstory helped to create a lot of suspense, and I didn't see the final revelations coming at all. Unfortunately, because of the ending, it really isn't something I'd watch more than once. It was just very entertaining.

I'll give it 4 out of 10.
