Army of Darkness (1992)
"A man is accidentally transported to 1300 A.D., where he must battle an army of the dead and retrieve the Necronomicon so he can return home."
As you know, I'm not so much reviewing these older movies now as just commenting on them but I couldn't let "Army of Darkness" escape quite so easily.
Like many people, I'm a huge Bruce Campbell fan and, as far as I'm concerned, he can really do no wrong apart from "My Name is Bruce" (2007).
I was, however, quite disappointed with "Army of Darkness" at the time as it wasn't horrific enough and had too much comedy for me. It was only to be expected after "Evil Dead II" (1987), and we all know that sequels tend to get progressively weaker, but I was really hoping that it was going to be good.
Having rewatched the DVD version several times, all I can say is that it's much better than the theatrical release in that the story does not lag so much. A downbeat alternative ending appears to be the only other change.
This comic finale to the "Evil Dead" series still loses pace occasionally but has some great one liners, loads of action, and the best skeleton army since "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963). Having said that, it's too silly to be a horror movie.
