I've never really liked this film and having read that it was originally supposed to be far more serious, I wish that the other version had been made instead. The rewritten script isn't too bad, but its surreal, chaotic ending is not to my taste.
Even though Michael Keaton only gets about 17 minutes of screen time as the titular lead character, he gets the best lines. The dialogue is very '80s, and there are no real "jokes" as such, but I doubt that anyone would still watch it for that reason anyway. "Beetlejuice" is far too sickly sweet in places to be pleasing for a horror fan, and the special effects which used to be considered fantastic are now a tad dated.
The only reason I still have a copy of this movie in my collection is that Geena Davis looks great. I used to really fancy Geena Davis back in the day.

I wish I had something better to say about "Beetlejuice", but this is far from being Tim Burton's best work. The whole "Banana Boat Song" scene is just embarrassing and reminds me of the excesses from "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986). It's probably a cultural difference more than anything, but I don't find any of it funny. I don't think I was ever the target audience for '80s comedies anyway.
It's definitely worth watching if you like things in the same vein as "Ghostbusters" and "High Spirits", but if you are expecting anything scary, you'll be sorely disappointed.
