Having just mentioned Uwe Boll in my previous post, I thought it was about time that I watched another of his masterpieces. I know Uwe Boll has more than his fair share of haters but I've now seen three of his movies which I quite liked: "BloodRayne" (2005), "Rampage" (2009), and, last night, "BloodRayne: Deliverance" (2007).
Of course, it was far from being the best western-horror hybrid movie in existence. That honour still goes to "High Plains Drifter" (1973). It was also a long way from being the worst since I'm not the greatest fan of "Grim Prairie Tales" (1990) and loathed "Death Valley: The Revenge of Bloody Bill" (2004). Still, I keep watching these things on the off-chance that I might find something of merit in them.
What I liked about "BloodRayne: Deliverance" wasn't the shoddy camerawork, the predictable storyline, or the only average acting. It was, quite simply, Natassia Malthe (who replaced Kristanna Loken as the titular character) who made me happy for just over an hour and a half. As superficial as it may be, I liked looking at her.
Ok, so that's not the whole truth, I also enjoyed the brief moments of Michael Paré as Pat Garrett. Even Zack Ward made a credible vampiric Billy the Kid so I couldn't find a lot of faults there.
The stand-out was Michael Eklund as "The Preacher" who turned out to be the most heroic character of them all. It was a good part, a little bit like Sawyer from "Lost", and he suited it well.
As always, it was the the pace and general lack of good production values which let this Uwe Boll effort down. Everyone looked the part, the locations were spot on, and the action scenes weren't bad at all. It just needed someone who really knew what they were doing behind the camera to make it all shine. Alas, poor Uwe Boll was not quite the man to do it.
Having said that, it was still okay. I wasn't bored and I'd probably even buy this movie to go with the first one which I already have. There's a third film in the series called "Bloodrayne: The Third Reich" (2010) which stars most of the cast from this one and I'd now quite like to watch that one too.
Are you waiting for the punchline where I say that I've been lying and that I really hated everything about this film? Well, it's not going to happen. I like what I like, and I really like vampire movies so I don't care what any other reviewers, the IMDb, or Tom, Dick and Harry down the road may think. "BloodRayne: Deliverance" was very entertaining for me and, if you give it a chance, you might like it too.
