The Last Lovecraft (2009)

"Jeff is an ordinary guy that is stuck at a dead end job with a boring life, but when a strange old man gives him an Ancient relic and tells him that he is the last bloodline of H.P. Lovecraft, He and his friend Charlie embark on an adventure to protect the relic piece from falling into the hands of the Starspawn and his minions that wish to reunite the relic and release Cthulhu back into the world."

In spite of a very promising start, this turned out to be yet another lame comedy full of nerd-culture references. Without doubt this was one of the most atrocious attempts at making anything to do with H.P. Lovecraft so far.

In fairness, I don't think this even tried to be all that serious about anything other than the use of as many expletives as possible. I'm no prude but comedy doesn't just mean swearing all the time. Inventive swearing can be funny but this was just repetitive, unimaginative and dull.

As far as the horror side of things went, I was bored by all the masks and rubber creatures. Some people might call "The Last Lovecraft" a throwback to the '80s but I don't actually remember many of the films which I watched back in the day being this crap. The special effects were ridiculously awful.

I really don't want to spend any more time on this. The dialogue was terrible, there was too much talk and not enough action, and, basically, to coin a phrase from the movie itself, it "sucked balls".

If it wasn't for all the swearing, this could have been something which less discerning fans of "Buffy" and "Angel" might have enjoyed. I hated it.
