My Top Ten Black Cats

Although you should appreciate cats every day, August 17th is officially "Black Cat Appreciation Day".

Often associated with bad luck and witchcraft, and portrayed as incarnations of evil, it's obvious that black cats have had some very bad press and a lot of misconceptions about them over the years. Horror movies, particularly, have done nothing to redress the balance.

Bearing in mind that black cats are completely harmless and lovable pets, and that their often sinister depiction in horror movies is purely fiction, here's a quick top ten list of my favourite black cats.

Some pathetic loser who is going by the name of "Eliza" on here has copied all the posts from my "Horror Cats" blog and even linked to the images from my Photobucket account (which I've now moved).

The copycat (no pun intended) blog is called "Pretty Cats". I know it had to happen sooner or later but this is just bullshit. How lazy do you have to be to copy somebody else's blog? How sad is that?

Even more stupid was the fact that this malicious asshat decided to follow "Dr Blood's Video Vault" as well. Presumably, they were looking for more things to steal. Good luck with that. I also blocked the idiot.

Remember, there is only one real "Horror Cats" blog.

Update (20/4/12):
It appears that the thief has thought better of it and has now deleted all their posts. Not much good to them without the pictures, eh? Now they are stealing a load of unrelated animal images from someone else.

It's Caturday! Inside (2007)

I'm starting this new feature for Saturdays since this is the quietest time of the week on the internet and. of course, I can't resist the pun.

Here's a still from the infamous cat scene in the overrated French gore movie "À l'intérieur" (known to English speakers as "Inside").

Béatrice Dalle looked really good cuddling a black cat, don't you think? It's a pity that it all ended so badly. Le pauvre chat.

At least the poor little bugger got more attention from "La Femme" than he did from Alysson Paradis' character.

Kicked back inside the house. Oh, the indignity!

Completely ignored by the sleeping human.

Brushed from the bed. Just shameful.

September's Horror Cat of the Month

I know it's late in the month but here's Ricky Martin from "American Psycho 2" (2002).

"A girl named Rachael has developed a taste for murder and will stand at nothing to become a college professor's assistant."

Ricky Martin survives after being cruelly caged in a microwave oven as a decoy and witnessing the death of his human as she gets bludgeoned to death in front of him. He even finds a piece of ribbon to play with, which was attached to the frame of his human's "Employee of the Month" award, so it isn't all bad.

August's Horror Cat of the Month

This month, it's Spider, the calico cat from "Spirit Lost" (1997).

"After John, a painter, and his wife move into an old house on an island, a seductive widow ghost shows up in mirrors, windows and in John's dreams and nightmares. She eventually lures him into moving into his attic studio while she tries to scare his now unhappy and pregnant wife away."

Spider appears a lot in "Spirit Lost" and doesn't even get a mention in the credits. Consider this your acknowledgement, you fine feline actor.

The Top Ten Most Heroic Cats

To redress the balance after my last post about cats, The Top Ten Most Evil Cat Deaths, here are some feline stars seen in more favourable circumstances.


1. Cat's Eye (1985)

General, aka The General, not only travels half-way across the country to save his beloved Amanda from an evil troll, but he endures all kinds of harsh treatment and torture along the way without complaining once. Truly a hero.


2. Alien (1979)

Everyone knows Jonesy. He has to be the most famous cat in horror even though there are still many who would argue that "Alien" isn't a horror film at all. He doesn't do anything more heroic to earn his place than hiss at an alien twenty times his size, but it's enough.


3. Sleepwalkers (1992)

Deputy Clovis knows the true vampiric nature of Charles and Mary Brady. Not many cats are capable of raising an army of more cats to save the human race, but he does.


4. The Shadow of the Cat (1961)

After her human is viciously murdered in front of her, Tabitha sets out to bring the assailants to justice, Her methods may be a little unorthodox, but what do you expect? She's only a cat.


5. Constantine (2005)

Without Duck, there would be no easy journey into Hell for John Constantine, Cats are half-in, half-out already, which only shows how truly heroic they must be all the time.


6. The Crow (1994)

Gabriel not only survives the massacre of his humans but stays to remind Eric Draven of his past in a way that no mere bird can. His reward? He gets to stay with Sarah for the sequel and protect her.


7. Let the Right One In (2008)

They may only be CGI cats, but they do their best to battle the newly created vampire Virginia. It's not as epic as "Sleepwalkers" as the whole fight scene is unintentionally funny.


8. Chillers (1990)

Portland Bill is just a cat who finds a couple of severed fingers while out hunting, but it's enough to spark a whole murder investigation. Here he gets his reward.


9. Black Christmas (1974)

Claude may not do anything that most people would consider heroic, but he survives the death of his mistress and everyone else in the sorority house. Some might even consider him to be a "final cat".


10. The Uncanny (1977)

These cats and a couple of dozen more get revenge on the murderers of Miss Malkin, their human carer, although arguably, they might only have done it to protect their inheritance. Yes, cats are quite mercenary like that.
