Here we go again. It's going to be another October where horror reviewers fall over themselves to watch as many movies as they can, and nobody will read their blogs because they are all too busy writing their own.
I usually take a break from blogging around this time every year because Americans yawping on about the Hallowe'en non-holiday get right on my tits, but owing to the fact that I've hardly watched anything new at this point, I may as well join in the circle jerk.
I'm not sure whether to label these three movies as horror or thrillers, but I watched them and moatly enjoyed them. You might like them too.
Hush (2016)
"A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window."
A bit of an updated version of "Wait Until Dark", "Mute Witness", "Blink", "Blind Terror", "Julia's Eyes", and a plethora of others where an attractive but disabled woman gets menaced in her own home.
There's a cat in it named "Bitch" who survives, so that's a point in its favour, but the Apple product placement is blatant for those of us who notice such things.
Nothing new here, and one scene apes "The Collector", but it's a nicely done home invasion movie. I believe that Blumhouse produced it (which usually is the kiss of death) and Netflix are distributing it.
The Good Neighbor (2016)
"A pair of mischievous high school kids create the illusion of a haunting on an unsuspecting neighbor. While keeping his every reaction under surveillance, they see much more than they bargained for."
As much as I hate writng "neighbour" in the misspelled American way, this is an American film, so I'll leave it alone.
Not much to say about this other than the leads are pretty good, the twist is unexpected, and the story managed to keep my attention until the end. In some ways it reminds me of "Killer Net" (1998) at the beginning, but the story soon heads in a very different direction.
Another cat has an important part to play in the denouement. How interesting.
Don't Breathe (2016)
"Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn't as helpless as he seems."
If you've already watched the previous two movies, there really is nothing original in this one. It's yet another home invasion featuring a disabled "victim" with a secret. No cat this time though.
Out of the the three, this is easily the weakest, not least because of its setting, obvious SJW panderings, and the huge mistake of trying to make anyone feel sorry for the thieves. Personally, I wanted all of them to die.
A lot of younger movie enthusiasts think this is good, and if you haven't seen anything like it before, I suppose it's okay.
Hopefully, I'll have something much better for you tomorrow.

My Top Ten Black Cats
Although you should appreciate cats every day, August 17th is officially "Black Cat Appreciation Day".
Often associated with bad luck and witchcraft, and portrayed as incarnations of evil, it's obvious that black cats have had some very bad press and a lot of misconceptions about them over the years. Horror movies, particularly, have done nothing to redress the balance.
Bearing in mind that black cats are completely harmless and lovable pets, and that their often sinister depiction in horror movies is purely fiction, here's a quick top ten list of my favourite black cats.
1. Becker from "Blacker Than the Night" (1975).

2. Mar from "The Grudge" (2004).

3. Wellington from "The Uncanny" (1977).

4. Pluto from "Masters of Horror: The Black Cat" (2006).

5. Satan from "Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key" (1972).

6. Belasco from "The Legend of Hell House" (1973).

7. Satanas from "Dr. Cyclops" (1940).

8. Mittens from "Funeral Home" (1980).

9. Hecuba from "Drag Me to Hell" (2009).

10. Ebony from "The Eye 3" (2005).

Bonus: Mr. Kittles from "Scary Movie 2" (2001).

Tomcat: Dangerous Desires (1993)
"Jacki, a scientist involved in genetic research, meets Tom, a young modern dancer who is suffering from a degenerative nerve disease. Jacki experiments with using genetic material taken from a cat to cure him, but the cure has side effects, and Tom begins to take on feline characteristics that may turn him into a monster. The situation is further complicated by Tom's attachment to Imogen—and Jacki's growing jealousy as she fears the loss of her patient and lover."
Since there's very little information about "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" online, and only a few short reviews which I could find, I decided that it was about time for me to redress the balance by rewatching and reviewing this "guilty pleasure" movie myself.
Although I have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about when I watch any erotic-thriller, especially one with a "CatMan" (to quote the German VHS title) and former Bond-girl Maryam d'Abo nude in it, I have to preface my review by saying that this is not entirely typical of the movies which I normally watch, but it's close enough to provide an example of things to come.
Having said that, I'll probably never watch "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" again unless I have a very good reason to share it, but once I've finished telling you about it, I'm certain that you'll want to see this for yourself.
"I want to talk to you up close."
"Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" is a typical '90s straight-to-video product which contains all the elements that the hipsters and SyFy channel viewers now only enjoy ironically. There's mostly bad acting, horrible cheesy dialogue, and lots of softcore sex scenes involving very hot actresses.
Richard Greico's outstanding feline performance is kind of great, because he suits the role perfectly, but the ladies will be sad to learn that he only gets semi-nude. You do get to see him shirtless several times, and he shows his bottom, but you're not going to see Richard's other Richard.
Offscreen kills and nothing particularly gruesome apart from some cruelty to insects, plus an anaesthetised cat with tubes coming out of it head in grainy video-footage of the important operation, mean that the R-rating is only for the nudity and occasional swearing which doesn't get any harder than the word "Fuck!"
At the heart of "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" is a fairly tame Frankenstein-genre plot with so many moments of humour that you can't believe the serious performances which surround them. How can this not be a comedy when the first things to give you a hint that Tom is half-cat are the types of food and bottles of milk in Tom's fridge?
"What a loser. No fucking beer!"
As a cat caregiver myself, those contents aren't much different to the ones in my fridge, give or take a couple of dozen cans of Monster, but we already have the title of the movie in our minds, and it's pretty obvious that Tom doesn't have a pet.
Because the story starts in medias res, the secret of why Tom is a little bit odd and has superhuman powers is the next thing revealed. We find out that sexy Dr. Jacki (Maryam d'Abo), who is now Tom's girlfriend (for lack of a better term at this point), has performed an unethical experiment.
Tom initially went to Dr. Jacki suffering from a terminal hereditary illness, and just as any good Canadian NHS doctor might do, she cured his genetic problem by replacing his damaged human cells with cat brain cells. Purrfect! Nothing could possible go wrong!
"You're not killing the cat!"
Here's where things start getting a bit more involved. Tom is prone to going out at night, staying out, and coming back in the morning... just like a cat. And what do tomcats need to go out for at night? Yeah, you guessed it. He's not the most faithful fella in the world.
Suffice it to say that Tom and his sexy dancing partner Imogen (Natalie Radford) start getting jiggy with it after what can only be described as the worst version of "Swan Lake" ever performed. There's wirework and flying through the air in this shit!
Not blue Bart Simpson.
Just to make sure that we still understand that Tom is a bit catty now, a playful splash of water scares him and causes him to take off his shirt (revealing a panther tattoo!), which is followed by some very astute observations and accusations about Tom's behaviour from Jacki. She's suspicious, a bit jealous, and she knows but can't prove that there's something wrong.
"You dumb, stupid, stubborn, zadnyaya chast' loshadi!"
It isn't long before the affair becomes more obvious. Without giving too much away, Jacki catches Tom and Imogen kissing at a nightclub called "Feline Sex Club". I shit you not, that's its name. Feline. Sex. Club. Nothing naughty could ever happen there!
It's not what it looks like. She's inflatable.
Lest I ruin the rest of the movie with spoilers, it's enough for you to know that Jacki and Tom break up in a bad way, a VHS tape of Jacki's experiment on Tom falls into the wrong hands a couple of times with deadly consequences, Tom becomes more unstable and unfaithful, and Imogen has a boyfriend who also becomes a problem.
"I'm King of the World... I mean King of 21 Jump Street!"
For anyone who suffers from vertigo, as Tom used to before he went all catified and found that he preferred high places, I'll just warn you that a torturous scene with Imogen might give you the heebies. It's not as bad as the one in "The Devil's Advocate" (1997) though.
"Do you like scary movies?"
Possibly the most awkward scene involves Imogen selfishly and tantalisingly having phone sex with Tom while he is on his cellphone in a public area of a hotel, but it's undeniably hot too! If watching this part of "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" makes you want to see more of Natalie Radford, you won't need to go to another movie because she's not shy! Trust me, you'll see everything you need to eventually.
The big question, however, which I'm sure you're asking, is "Are there any cats in this movie?" I'm delighted to tell you that, yes, there are.
There's a Persian cat during the opening credits, a Tabby cat involved in the experiment, and Imogen and her boyfriend Dale (Sean Orr) share a Siamese cat. Two black and white moggies (from what appears to be stock footage which is flipped horizontally at one point) also hang out and watch Tom and Imogen run around a lumber mill near the end.
Written and directed by Paul Donovan who (according to the IMDb) also directed "Def-Con 4" (1985) and 12 episodes of the "Lexx" TV show (1997-2002), neither of which I've seen, "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" isn't a great horror movie, but it's far from being a terrible one. It's better than 99.9% of today's progressive-liberal tainted rubbish anyway.
It may look like a TV movie, and it's more about a very weird romance than it is about horror or sci-fi, but "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" is nicely filmed on location in Vancouver (with real cameras and tripods and stuff rather than handheld shakycams in someone's backyard), and it's an amusing little product of its time.
There's nothing to get too upset about with this movie unless you're looking for a hardcore porno or some extreme bloody violence, because it isn't one of those. It's not that "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" doesn't have any violence at all or some absolutely beautiful and thoroughly refreshing politically incorrect moments, but it's not meant for horror purists, and it certainly isn't scary.
Yes, it really is called "CatMan" in Germany, and they replaced Maryam d'Abo with Natalie Radford on the VHS artwork. Meh. It could be worse.
Unlike the mean-spirited and humourless twonks who rated "Tomcat: Dangerous Desires" as 3.6 on the IMDb, I'm giving this highly entertaining movie 6 out of 10 because it wasn't slow, boring, or preachy, and I liked it.

An interview with Maria Olsen
Just a relaxed midnight chat and interview with filmmaker Maria Olsen from MOnsterworks66 including some stuff about "Percy Jackson and the Olympians", energy drinks, South African movies, vampire novels, remakes, indie movies, and crowdfunding campaigns, plus additional random banter.
I'm obviously not a very good "podcaster", I have no idea how to edit stuff with Audacity, and the Pulse Audio system on Ubuntu made my microphone all crackly and scratchy, but it is what it is. You might enjoy some of it.
Please also check out my review of Maria's latest movie "Live-In Fear", and keep up to date with further information by subscribing to the official MOnsterworks66 Facebook page.

It's Caturday! Some obscure finds
I know Caturday is nearly over, but we had a few problems with a tornado on Thursday. Most of the town was without power and, of course, the internet was down until only a few minutes ago.
Since I was one of the lucky ones who had electricity again within a few hours, I spent the last three days watching some pretty obscure (and not very good) horror movies.
On Thursday, I watched "The Haunting of Julia" (1977), "Milo" (1998), and "Bloody Birthday" (1981). I finally saw "The Dark Knight Rises" too which was horror for me anyway, but I'll write about that later. "Baturday" has been postponed due to wind.
On Friday, after helping some friends move fallen branches out of their yard, I watched a really dreadful Canadian anthology on VHS called "Mania" (also known as "Mania: The Intruder"). I think it was originally a made-for-TV movie from 1986 because I'd never heard of it before.
In the segment called "The Good Samaritan", Stephen Hunter (playing Dan Weston) exclaimed, "How did you get in here?" to the cat below. Obviously, it was because he got in through the same basement window that the knife-wielding maniac did! There was a twist to the story which I saw coming a mile away. It probably explains why the cat was eager to leave this film too.

Then I watched a quite a hard to find VHS title called "The Slayer" (1982). I have a feeling that it was actually banned during the "video nasties" nonsense in Britain, but Vipco re-released it on VHS with a few cuts. I have no idea if this is on DVD, but it's an awful movie and doesn't deserve to be.
At the end of "The Slayer", you find out that it was all a little girl's nightmare, it's Christmas and her father has bought her a big black cat for a present. There was no cat anywhere else in the movie so her terrified reaction to it made about as much sense as anything else. I'd avoid this one if I was you.

Earlier today, out of desperation, I started watching my "Drive-in Cult Classics" pack but I didn't get to any horror ones yet. To be honest, the first DVD seemed like '70s porn and I fell asleep to it. When I woke up, the internet was back on. Yay!
That's all I have time for right now. I wrote this in a bit of a rush, but I have dozens of sites to check, comments to read, and reviews to write of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" movies for tomorrow. With more storms predicted, that's assuming that the electricity and the internet stays on.
The Answers to Tuesday's Quiz
1. Monica Keena wears that big diver's watch in "Night of the Demons" (2009). She keeps checking it as she waits for dawn to come at 6am.
2. The cat is Hecate who belongs to Catwoman in "Batman: The Movie" (1966). I didn't say that it was from a horror movie.
3. Gnaghi is eating spaghetti (and quite a few other things) in "Cemetery Man" (1994). I even mentioned him by name in my review so that should have been easy.

It's Caturday! No movies for you!
It's far too hot to sit in the catroom and watch movies with Willow and Suzi so I've decided to let sleeping cats lie. I'll go to bed too so I can get up early and go to the pawn shop at a decent time later.

This is a rare moment as it's not often that I catch them together like this. It either has to be too cold or too hot for them to tolerate each other. My weather applet says that it's currently 99 degrees with a "chance of a storm" so this amnesty will only last until the thunder starts. Willow will soon be hiding under the futon while Suzi runs round the house like a maniac.
They also have completely different tastes in movies. Willow prefers the romantic Spanish comedies of Penelope Cruz while Suzi is all about Tom Cruise. Thank God for "Vanilla Sky" or there'd be even more fights over the remote control.
Since Suzi doesn't have as many pictures of herself online as Willow, here's one of her pretending to sleep while enjoying my old office chair in front of a window fan last night.

She's such a faker. It's probably because she has no tail. No, it wasn't caused by some horrific accident. She's a Manx. More than that, she's a Torbie Manx. She has an extra chromosome which makes her even cleverer than me and, of course, much better looking.
Anyway, I'll be back later with what I found at the pawn shop. I'm hoping for "Night of the Demons", "Cemetery Man", and more Echo Bridge quadruple features, but it'll probably only be the latter which turn up.

It's Caturday! Some celebrities and their cats
It's Caturday again! It's also 95 degrees outside, so don't expect to see much from me on here today apart from some even hotter pictures of celebrities and their cats. Yes, I know that's a crappy introduction, but I feel like I'm dying here. Where I come from even our cooked food doesn't reach this temperature.
I thought about doing a top ten of horror celebrities with cats, but that would be far too easy by just dipping into my screencaps folders and pulling out scenes from horror movies where someone is in the same shot as a cat. I also want to save that for another time when I can concentrate better.
I even thought about posting up some behind the scenes stills from older horror movies such as the one below from "Tales of Terror" (1962) with Peter Lorre, Vincent Price and a couple of black cats.

But that would be kind of boring really, especially if you don't know anything about the movie itself.
Instead, I trawled the internet in search of some famous celebrities who aren't nearly so famous for horror or their feline adoration. I actually found hundreds of them. I could even go through some back issues of "Cat Fancy" magazine (yes, I subscribe) and pull out a couple of dozen more.
I had to be selective though, and since I'm a rampant heterosexual, I decided to make the following list of twelve actresses and their cats. I may do another one for male celebrities next week, but we'll see how it goes.
These aren't in any particular order except, perhaps, for the cuteness of the cat involved. If you believe that then you'll also believe that if you say "gullible" really slowly, it sounds like "orange".
1. Zooey Deschanel

She was in "The Happening" (2008) which sort of counts as a horror film, but since I gave up on that idea, just look at the cute little kitten. Awww!
2. Penélope Cruz

She's also never been in a horror movie although she's been in some simply horrible ones. Doesn't Penélope look good with a cat on her shoulder? Nearly everyone looks good with a cat on their shoulder though, even pirates. Harrr!
3. Sherilyn Fenn

Most famous for "Twin Peaks" but a lot sexier in "Meridian" (1990), Sherilyn Fenn has a really grumpy looking puss in this picture. The Persian doesn't look too happy either.
4. Paris Hilton

The "House of Wax" (2005) star is obviously more famous for carrying nasty little yappy dogs around with her, but she also likes cats. I believe she has a "Munchkin" cat (one of those poor beasts which has been selectively bred with legs too short for its body) and several others.
5. Nicole Kidman

Ginger hair and a black cat? Obviously Nicole Kidman must be a witch! It's a good thing that we don't live in the 16th century anymore, isn't it?
6. Maggie Gyllenhaal

Currently most famous for being in "The Dark Knight" (2008), Maggie Gyllenhaal clearly loves her cat. That poor cat has a face that only a mother could love too.
7. Cameron Diaz

I watched Cameron Diaz in "The Box" (2009) recently, but I'm sure that isn't her only claim to fame apart from also being a nutter in "Vanilla Sky" (2001). Here she is with a vanilla cat though (a lot like my first white cat) which makes for a great picture. The cat's name is Little Man.
8. Drew Barrymore

It's nice to see an older Drew Barrymore clutching a kitten, especially after all those publicity shots with General for "Cat's Eye" (1985) when she was a child herself. Start them young and they'll always be cat lovers.
9. Christina Ricci

Either this is a still from "That Darned Cat" (1997) or Christina Ricci must have learned that she was going to be in that awful "Cursed" movie one day. I've seen this photograph credited as Christina and her very own cat so I'll go with that (especially as this is the scariest picture on the list!). I'm glad that Christina looks a lot better than this nowadays.
10. Madonna

Yes, she counts as an actress, sort of. She was good in "Die Another Day" (2002), wasn't she? There are other photos of Madonna with her cat, but I'm not sure about their legality. This one clearly came from Madonna.com so I'm making sure that I give both the credit and the link.
11. Katy Perry

Mainly a popstar but with aspirations to be an actress, Katy Perry is now known for her love of cats. Strangely, there aren't many pictures of her online with a feline companion. This seems to be an older photograph, and the cat doesn't look too comfortable. Katy has confessed that she wasn't a cat person until fairly recently and it shows. The cat's name is Kitty Purry, of course.
12. Audrey Hepburn

Okay, so this is a bit of a cop-out ending. I really wanted a picture of the late Audrey Hepburn with her own cat, but this on set shot of Audrey and "Cat" from "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) will have to do. It's not the usual picture which a lot of these lists use anyway.
As much as I would like to sit here all day posting pictures while I dehydrate, that's all for now, folks.
If you are currently owned by a cat make sure that he or she has plenty of water today (and every day for that matter). Also, if you know that there are some strays where you live, stick some bowls of water outside for them too. You wouldn't want to be thirsty on a day like this, would you?
